My talk will be called “The Joys & Perils of Instrument Design.” In it I’ll discuss my original sound-sculptures, instruments made of junk, hardware, and found objects mounted on electroacoustic sound boards, played with chopsticks, violin bows, wind-up toys, knitting needles, and plectra, and modified with a bank of live electronics. Attention will be paid to the origin of materials, from medieval technologies to contemporary ones, as well as the twin dangers and affordances of working with new and unique instruments.

Looking at Sound: with Interactive Visuals

When we engage multiple senses we can start to understand the music and art in front of us with new a new perspective. Audiovisual art encourages us to strengthen the connections between our ears and eyes. Strengthening this pathway provides new tools for contemplation and analysis, making us better musicians or artists. When students create their own audiovisual art, they develop skills to look deeper into the music and find opportunities for creating art that go beyond the imagination. The student’s future will depend on their ability to navigate this increasingly audiovisual world, and by taking a creative role, they will find themselves at the forefront of this artistic development.

05 Lecture

Aug. 12
17:00 pm
TianJin Juilliard

Composition faculty

Dr. Niccolo Athens

What is sonata form?

Given that many pieces a piano student will learn are composed in so-called “sonata form,” it is important to understand this musical structure. Many students are probably familiar with the term, and some may even have basic knowledge about the labels usually associated with it – but how can we understand this form in a deeper way than just these usual labels? What are the driving ideas behind this way of composing? In what kind of music can you find this structure? Where did this term come from? How did sonata form develop? When did composers start and stop using it? Is it still possible to write in this way? This lecture will answer all these questions and more!

Let’s get WACKY with SOUND!

Students will explore the vast worlds of sound that appear once we step outside the box. Each student will construct their very own, unique, musical instrument using provided materials and equipment. We will learn to improvise with these new sounds and on the day of the final concert, we will join together as the ERMu Labs’ OUTSIDETheBOX Ensemble.

Concert

Shangyin Opera House

The Final Concert will be held at the Shangyin Opera House on Sunday, August 13th.
